The changing of seasons means harvest festivals, autumn foliage littering the ground, and a chill in the air — all of which must be accompanied by a change in wardrobe. We took to the streets to ask Aggies of all majors what clothing they expect to see walking our concrete runways as the seasons begin to change.
Sweaters
Many students at NMSU are ready to trade in their shorts for sweaters. With the weather currently looking to be sunny and warm for the foreseeable future, students eagerly anticipate the first sign of a 70-degree, partly cloudy day to bring out their fluffy fleeces. Known abroad as jumpers, sweaters are loved for their versatility and easy pairing with heavyweight fabrics such as jeans, corduroy, and tweeds.
“I feel like they’re very fall-y,” said student Liduvina Tolentino. “It’s like perfect for here, because, like, you can just throw those on with some jeans and you immediately look like October.”
So, get ready to leap into those baggy jumpers Aggies, and embrace the fuzzy softness we can start to experience this time of year.
Flannels
Other students cannot wait to break out the seasonal flannels. These comfy and durable pieces transform a simple outfit into urban chic. They can also bring a bit of Seattle grunge to our corner of New Mexico. Colors and styles ranging from soft neutral tones to vibrant primary colors, or even black-and-white checkerboards, are part of why flannels are an integral part of many wardrobes.
Whether you like your flannels buttoned to the neck, tied around your waist, or tucked into your favorite pair of jeans, many Aggies believe that flannels are an undeniable staple in college fall fashion.
Layers
Another anticipated fashion trend, and one that we look forward to seeing our fellow Aggies rock, is layering. Layers can be styled in a wide array, from skirts over jeans to T-shirts over hoodies. Mixing and matching different layers is what many consider to be one of the best parts of Autumn attire.
And, if you find yourself lacking in long sleeves and graphic tees, some Aggies told us they find the perfect pieces for both layering and adding to their wardrobe from second-hand shops like Savers and Goodwill.
Boots
I hope you kept those Uggs from high school in your rotation, because many students predict and hope that there will be a resurgence of these fleece-filled shoes during the upcoming months. This unconventional shoe brand has had an on-again, off-again relationship with pop culture. It seems that nowadays, they are back and better than ever, with the increased interest in 90s and Y2K fashion. One student remarked that Uggs are even branching out into the world of high-end fashion.
“They [Uggs] did a really big, like, rebranding, and I just saw a collab with, like, Vogue and things like that,” said student Trinity Gonzales.
Now, while you’re watching the autumn leaves float to the ground, make sure to also keep your eyes peeled for these fun fashion re-‘boots’ of the season.
