I moved to Las Cruces completely unaware of what was in store for me. To be honest, when I applied to NMSU, I had no idea where it even was; I just submitted my application.
Coming from my small, nostalgic town of Lovington, New Mexico, NMSU can feel like a second home for many high school graduates. It’s a place close enough to family, yet far enough away to become independent.
When I arrived in Las Cruces, I was in awe. As much as I love my hometown and what it’s done for me, I enjoy going out and experiencing new things daily. I want to sit in shops, discover edgy hole-in-the-walls, and have a boba store around every corner.
For reference, in my quaint town, we have to drive to the next town over to go shopping — unless you’re okay with Bob’s Thriftway, our one and only grocery store, or the very ancient Bealls department store.
Las Cruces has given me many unprecedented experiences, but when I spoke with locals or those who have come here from larger cities, I realized lots of people don’t see the captivating essence this complex town beholds.
So, I’ve decided to share my own small-town fervor with you all in this guide to the city of Las Cruces.
Coffee:
I don’t go a day without a coffee … or three. In Las Cruces, I have grown to love the locally-owned cafe havens like The Bean, Grounded, Milagro, and Picacho Coffee Roasters. These chic nooks all have beautiful spots to sit, play great music, and use local beans.
I like getting into my car, picking up my friends, and rolling down all the windows to travel to these vibrant coffee shops, no matter the time of day. This little activity lights a fire in the soul. There’s nothing like lounging with your friends while classics play above and an iced coffee freezes your hands.
Shopping:
We don’t wanna hear about those chain locations, do we? NO, of course we don’t! I like to thrift, second hand. Give me those used old clothes or I will have NOTHING.
Forget about Goodwill and Savers, there are many small thrift stores located around the town that need a little love. Load up in the car and drive down Amador Avenue. At the Amador Plaza, there are two spots that deserve a few more admirers. New Digs Clothing Exchange and La Casa Thrift Store are home to unique pieces that may take a keen eye to find.
My friends and I also like to stop by the Second Chance Thrift Store on Main Street. Not only are there many gems within, but they also fundraise for ACTion Programs for Animals. Overall, a great cause with great finds.
Socialite:
Really, Azure? Coffee and shopping? Really interesting insights. Guys, we’re not just sippin’ iced chai and buying bootcut jeans — we’re adding zeal to our Las Cruces residency.
After our day finding vintage jewelry and chatting with local shop owners, we’re soaking up the sun in the outdoor patio of Grounded on a Friday. On Friday nights, Grounded invites guests to enjoy local artists live in their patio. This is a great way to experience new music and slow down time. The smell of fresh coffee in the warm atmosphere and surrounding yourself with chatter and gentle laughter could become something sacred for you.
Grounded isn’t the only hotspot downtown. On the first Friday of every month, downtown Las Cruces hosts the Fine Arts Flea Market, complete with crafts and pop-up thrift shops. Go with your loved ones and experience various vendors’ passions at different booths, while enjoying food truck tacos and freshly squeezed lemonade. Truly something to look forward to.
Just around the corner from the plaza sits Eyeconik Records, a cozy record store with an arcade located in the back. In that same back area, the store invites local indie and rock bands to play for anyone who wishes to enjoy, free of charge.
By following along on Instagram and paying close attention to flyers around town, your time in Las Cruces could be elevated even more. Aside from the rich culture and extensive history this town has, there are many tucked away wonders just waiting for you to find them.
