In a statement sent to The Round Up on Thursday (Sept. 22), the Dean of Students office announced the death of a New Mexico State University student, which occurred off campus. An investigation into her death is on-going.

Emilia Rueda, 20, from El Paso, Texas, was a junior studying art here at NMSU. She attended El Paso High School and was known to the EPHS Tiger Pride Band, according to a post from the band’s Facebook page.

“Emilia Rueda wasn’t in band but many of us know her because she was always around supporting her sister Athena or working the concessions stand with her parents,” the post read. “To the Rueda family, we all mourn and hurt with you during this time.”

Ann Goodman, dean of students, wrote that Rueda’s death is a loss for the Aggie community.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Emilia. Our Aggie community grieves her tragic loss. We send our heartfelt condolences to her family and all those who knew her,” Goodman wrote.

This is a developing story. The Round Up will follow up with details as they become available.
