The New Mexico State Aggies baseball (5-6) hosted a weekend series against the Prairie View A&M Panthers baseball (3-7) from Feb. 27–March 1 at Presley Askew Field. A stretch of warm weather created a perfect ballpark atmosphere, and the Aggies took full advantage, sweeping the Panthers in dominant fashion to secure their first series sweep of the season.
Saturday night’s matchup proved to be the tone-setter, highlighted by a strong performance from the Aggies bullpen. Dylan Weekly earned the win with an efficient outing, tossing 4.0 innings while allowing zero earned runs and striking out four batters. Weekly attacked the zone early and consistently, limiting Prairie View A&M’s ability to capitalize on its baserunners. After he exited, the Aggies bullpen picked up right where he left off. The pitching staff combined to shut out Prairie View A&M over the final four frames, closing the door on any hopes of a late rally.
Offensively, the Aggies delivered timely hitting throughout the night, finishing with seven runs on seven hits. Chris Daniels provided a spark with a solo home run and one RBI, while Bryce Campbell added two hits and an RBI to keep innings alive. Aidan Taclas chipped in with a hit and an RBI of his own, and Steve Solorzano recorded a double and scored a run. The Aggies also capitalized on Prairie View A&M miscues, as two throwing errors by the Panthers led to additional scoring opportunities and ultimately proved costly.
Although Prairie View A&M tallied 10 hits, the Aggies defense limited the damage and prevented those opportunities from turning into big innings. The Panthers struck first in the second inning, briefly grabbing momentum, but New Mexico State responded quickly and never allowed the visitors to regain control. Strong defensive plays in key moments helped strand runners and preserve the lead.
Friday night’s game ended 12-6, with Saturday’s final being 7-2. The sweep was completed on Sunday with a 16-1 win.
With the sweep complete, the Aggies now turn their attention to an exciting midweek home matchup against in-state rival New Mexico Lobos baseball on Tuesday, March 3. New Mexico State will remain at home for five straight games, including a weekend series beginning March 6 against the UTSA Roadrunners baseball. Carrying momentum from the sweep, the Aggies look to continue building consistency as conference play approaches.
