With President Trump’s Sept. 5 decision to roll back DACA, many Dreamers across the United States are feeling unsure about their future. Students affected by DACA’s removal may especially have limited resources and information on the subject due to the demands of a college education.
On Monday Sept. 11, the NMSU Chicano Programs debuted their new webpage, https://daca.nmsu.edu. The website circulates information for students affected by the removal of DACA.
“We know we have students here at NMSU under DACA,” said Director of Chicano Programs Laura Gutierrez-Spencer. “We wanted to be able provide concrete information on resources available to these students,” Gutierrez added.
The webpage emphasizes the importance of submitting an application for renewal of DACA benefits by Oct. 5, if registration would expire between Sept. 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018. Chicano programs also highly recommends that regardless of personal situation an immigration attorney be contacted as soon as possible to either submit an application for renewal, or to determine other options.
The webpage features other crucial information from dependable sources like figures and statistics from the Department of Homeland Security, statements from the campus Police Chief, Stephen Lopez and the NMSU President, Garrey Carruthers and a webinar explaining DACA. The Webinar serves as an in-depth presentation by Immigration attorneys to explain the past, present and future of DACA.
The Chicano Programs specialize in helping first generation Hispanic and low-income students with financing and completing their college education. Dr. Gutierrez-Spencer added that with the repeal of DACA many first generation Hispanic students are worried about their education because of circumstances outside of their control.
“The students affected by DACA’s removal are feeling cast aside and torn down by this decision. We want to provide any information we can to help these students,” said Dr. Guttierez-Spencer.
The mission statement of the Chicano Programs states that they’re a support service that promotes and empowers all student success through education, advocacy and development of cultural literacy. Gutierrez believes that the webpage does exactly that; serving to inform students both affected and not affected by the repeal of DACA.
The NMSU Chicano Programs is available to help anyone with DACA or non-DACA related issues and concerns in person, over the phone or by e-mail. The Chicano Programs office is located in Garcia Annex rm. 138 and can be contacted via phone (575-646-4206) or e-mail ([email protected]).
