New Mexico State vs. New Mexico quick hits

NMSU looks to sweep UNM with a win in Albuquerque tonight.

New Mexico State head coach Chris Jans will attempt to become the first coach since John G. Griffith in 1917-18 to sweep both UTEP and New Mexico in their inaugural season in Las Cruces when the Aggies face the Lobos tonight inside Dreamstyle Arena in Albuquerque.

NMSU (6-2) is coming off their first home loss of the season against San Diego while UNM fell at Colorado their last time out.

Here are a couple things of note as the Aggies look to improve to 3-0 against Mountain West schools this season.

Logwood out for UNM

Senior forward Sam Logwood has taken a leave of absence from the Lobos to evaluate his future, meaning he will not be in action tonight against NMSU. The 6’8 senior forward is UNM’s leading scorer, averaging 14.9 points per game. Guards Chris McNeal and Anthony Mathis will look to take on more of the scoring load, as both players are the only two other players besides Logwood averaging double figures.

Lofton looks to get out of offensive slump

Aggie guard Zach Lofton has been in a bit of a slump the last two games. After averaging 24.4 points per game through the team’s first five games, Lofton has only scored 11 total points in the last two games combined, against Prairie View A&M and San Diego. The good news for the team is that in the previous meeting, Lofton sliced up the Lobo defense for a game-high 28 points.

Aggies look to begin road-heavy stretch with win

After beginning the season with six of their first their first eight games inside the friendly confines of the Pan American Center, the Aggies will begin a grueling stretch that will see the team play nine of their next 10 games away from Las Cruces. The Aggies will travel to the likes of Chicago (two different times), Hawai’i, and Bakersfield Calif. Besides a Dec. 12 home contest against Eastern New Mexico, the Aggies won’t play again in front of the home faithful until January 18.
