Seattle extends NM State’s WAC woes

The Aggies are held scoreless for a fourth straight game in their 4-0 loss to conference foe Seattle.

The New Mexico State women’s soccer team falls 4-0 to the Seattle Redhawks, who felt right at home in an uncharacteristically rainy Las Cruces, dropping the Aggies to a disappointing 1-13 and keeping them winless in WAC play.

It didn’t take long for the Redhawks to get out in front, with an early yellow card on NM State defender Kelly Burton setting up a free kick that SU midfielder Kelsey Vogel drove past keeper Ashley Martin for a 7’ go-ahead strike.

Seattle got off to a similarly hot start in the second half after the Aggies made the switch to Mia Montano between the sticks, tacking on another goal right away in the 47’ before piling on in the later stages of the half, adding a 65’ minute tap-in and a 83’ cracker (for Vogel’s second of the match) that banged in off the top of the woodwork and into the back of the net.

The four goals allowed Friday afternoon match a season worst for New Mexico State in head coach Rob Baarts’ first season in charge and extends their streak of giving up more than three scores to six games, showing what has looked like a regression on defense.

“If you watch the game on video, it might look like a replay of the last four games,” Baarts said of his team’s performance. “We compete with people, play some good soccer, do some good stuff and then have a complete mind-screw and end up giving a goal away and we just keep giving goals away that we can’t afford to give away.”

In the backline’s defense, though, not much help in the form of meaningful possession or offensive help has been there to take some pressure off.

The Aggies’ attacking struggles have been an issue all season, highlighted by their scoring less than once per contest (12 goals in 14 games played) and consistently being outshot by the opponent, but it’s been especially apparent throughout conference play, with the Aggies still yet to register a goal against a WAC opponent.

Baarts and the Aggies don’t have much time to turn things around either, with only four conference games remaining before the WAC Tournament at the end of the month.

NM State is currently on the outside looking in (only six teams are able to qualify) but has a golden chance to start a run this weekend when they take on last-place Chicago State for their penultimate home game of the season.
