New Mexico State University gained a new member of the Board of Regents Monday, Feb. 17. Arsenio Romero, the current superintendent of Deming Public Schools, was nominated by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and confirmed unanimously by the state Senate.

Romero has served as superintendent in Deming since 2017. He is an alumni of NMSU, earning a bachelor degree in elementary education and a doctorate degree in educational management and development. He earned his master’s degree from the University of New Mexico in educational administration and leadership.

“New Mexico State University has been a huge part of my life and I am so honored for this opportunity as a Regent,” Romero said in an interview with NMSU News Center. “I hope to give back to NMSU and I look forward to bringing the preK-20 perspective to this powerful and diverse team. Thank you, Sen. John Arthur Smith for sponsoring me. And thank you to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham for this appointment.”

Romero will be taking over the seat left vacant after Jerean Hutchinson resigned as regent in April 2019. Romero will continue his term as regent through the end of December 2020.
