Aggie softball sweeps doubleheader

Derek Gonzales, Staff Writer

The New Mexico State softball team returned home from a six-games-in-four-days stretch this past weekend to host the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers in a doubleheader Tuesday evening at the New Mexico State Softball Complex, and were able to win both games by scores of 9-4 and 10-0.

Senior pitcher Makayla McAdams picked up the win in the first game, going 4.1 innings, striking out four batters and only allowing two earned runs. Karysta Donisthorpe relieved McAdams, only allowing two runs in 2.2 innings of work.

The Aggie offense came back to life after struggling to score runs in games against Boise State, Northwestern, and Oregon State last weekend, with freshman Kelsey Horton going three for three with two RBIs to lead the way. Five other Aggies delivered RBIs in a balanced attack that struggled to get going early, scoring seven of their nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the second game of the doubleheader, freshman Kayla Green took the mound for State, and as the Aggies have done in most of their wins this season, got off to a fantastic start. The team had outscored opponents 22-8 in the second inning coming into the day, and added to that total by outscoring the Mountaineers, 8-0, in the second frame. Victoria Castro did most of the damage, bringing in four runs in her two at-bats in the inning, including her first career homerun in her first at-bat and a double to right field in the second at-bat. Her career night continued when she hit an opposite-field solo homerun to increase the Aggie lead to 10-0. Green coasted after she was given the eight-run cushion after the second inning, and her final numbers had her throw a complete game, with no runs given up, only five hits allowed, and three strikeouts. Her record improved to 3-0 on the season.

The Aggies improved to 13-6 on the year, and Mount St. Mary’s remains winless at 0-8. The Aggies head to Las Vegas, Nevada, this weekend to compete in the Alexis Park Classic and will face Southern Utah, Drake, Florida Atlantic, Saint Mary’s (California), and Oregon. The next time the team plays at the New Mexico State Softball Complex will be March 8 against the New Mexico Lobos at five p.m.
