Brief: Has the NMSU v. UNM rivalry gone too far?

A video surfaced early this week of New Mexico State University quarterback Diego Pavia allegedly urinating on the University of New Mexico logo inside the practice facility in Albuquerque.

In the video, exclusively published by KOB 4, it appears that Pavia is in full NMSU practice gear, while seemingly expressing “f*** you” towards the Lobo facility. Another player recording the video then showed the middle finger facing a different Lobo logo in the facility.

In a press conference on Tuesday, offensive coordinator Tim Beck spoke on the incident. He said the incident, to the best of his knowledge, occurred before the season began.

“Well obviously we’re disappointed in what happened,” Beck said. “But that’s one of those things where we’ll deal with him and deal with it internally and move on.”

Many students became aware of the video, as the incident has been shared on multiple social media platforms like @barstoolnmsu on Instagram.

“I believe that’s disrespectful and even though we may be rivals, that shouldn’t be happening,” sophomore Daniela Carranco said. “He’s the main player of the team. So that’s a very bad example for the school.”

In light of controversial events that occurred last year involving the men’s basketball team, some students are noticing a negative change in NMSU Athletics’ reputation.

“I feel like NMSU has to be a little more strict around it,” an NMSU student said. “There should really be no problems outside of the sport. They should just be worried on winning and not out of sport activities.”

According to coach Beck, Pavia is still expected to start against Florida International on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
