Bringing together families, volunteers, and community partners, the Roadrunner Food Bank (RRFB) invited Las Crucians to its Las Cruces Produce Pop-Up Drive-Through at Mesilla Valley Mall on Nov. 8. In partnership with volunteers from Las Cruces Public Schools, the event served around 600 households, making it one of the most impactful local distributions this season.
This event offered fresh fruits, vegetables, and other produce as the primary focus of the distribution. As cars lined up across the mall parking lot, families expressed both relief and gratitude for the nutritional aid.
“This event is truly so helpful. I have five kids, and it’s definitely a worry how I’m going to continue to provide food on the table for my children every night, attendee Annie Cruz said. “This event gives me something to fall back on. I’m super grateful.”
In today’s economic climate, many families are facing rising costs of living, unpredictable food prices, and ongoing financial strain. For households already balancing tight budgets, the increase in grocery costs can make it difficult to provide constant, nutritious meals. Events like the Produce Pop-Up Drive-Through offer immediate relief by ensuring families are provided with food. It creates a reliable safety net at a time when many people are experiencing uncertainty or reduced income.
Roadrunner Food Bank relies on a wide range of donors to make these events possible. Contributions from individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and partner organizations are essential to these efforts. For the Las Cruces location, donations are coordinated by Development Officer Ariana Bautista, who ensures the community receives reliable assistance during times of need.
According to RRFB’s Director of Community Advocacy, Jesse Val Maanen, the timing of these events is especially important.
“The holiday season is typically the busiest time of the year, and this year is no different. If you or someone you know could benefit from food assistance, please contact us or come to one of our events; all are welcome.” Van Maanen said. “We are here to help and assist in any way we can.”
In addition to the food distribution, the day also included the fifth annual “Burgers for Badges,” a community event hosted by Las Cruces first responders and their families. Attendees enjoyed free food, games, and family activities. The event focused on recognizing the daily sacrifices made by local law enforcement and emergency personnel.
“Las Cruces wouldn’t be what it is without our first responders,” community member Amadeo Leon said. ”Honoring them feels like something we should do more often.”
Together, these events transformed the mall’s parking lot into a space of service and gratitude. From providing food to families in need to honoring first responders, the day brought members of the community together.
This event highlighted the strength of community partnerships in Las Cruces, especially during the busiest and most demanding time of the year.
“I’m honestly so unbelievably grateful that this event exists. And not only that, but it’s also so convenient,” attendee Jullisa De La O said, “I just bought some clothes and then came out here and got some free food for me and my family—it’s a win-win.”
