As both the New Mexico State Aggies and the Kennesaw State University Owls ran out for warmup, all doused in pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Night, the Pan American Center was electrified with Aggie fans on Feb. 26.
The Owls were first in the basket with five points shot by Keyarah Berry, who achieved a season high of 31 points against NMSU in January. Currently, Kennesaw ranks two places above NMSU in Conference USA standings in ninth place with a (12-14, 5-10 CUSA) record compared to NMSU in 11th, and a (8-18, 4-10 CUSA) record.
Senoj Jones broke the Aggies’ game-opening scoring drought with a smooth layup and had five turnovers compared to the Owls’ seven, with only three points to show for said turnovers. Aggie Lucia Yenes closed out the first 10 minutes with a layup, finalized at Kennesaw, 20, Aggies, 11.

As Kennesaw’s offense continued to shine with seven defensive rebounds, NMSU’s defense latched on quickly going into the second quarter. With six steals and two blocks on the Owls, the Aggies were inching their way closer to KSU’s lead but still had not surpassed them.
Leading the Aggies in points so far, Yenes takes the cake with 12 points scored in the first half. She’s not unfamiliar with such a feat; she leads the team with both 341 points this season and 22 blocks, and boosted the Aggies into the halftime lead at 29-27.
Back onto the court after halftime, both offenses kept the score neck-and-neck, not yet faltering below a few points apart and seemingly turning over a new leaf after spending nearly 20 minutes, total, trailing.

Jones, another standout player, earned NMSU 13 points so far and sank a layup to start a scoring run and pull the Aggies away from the Owls at 43-33 at the end of the third quarter.
As tensions on the court intensified, Aggie defense mounted more pressure on KSU, whose spark was fizzling out despite leading 26-18 in turnover points. With game stoppages and violations flying, efforts to snag the lead became more frantic.
NMSU reigned dominant as the game closed at 52-40.
New Mexico State women’s basketball will continue for the last game of their at-home stretch on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.
