The head coach of New Mexico State University’s women’s basketball team, Jody Adams, was fired after four seasons with the program. This follows a less-than-ideal finish of the season with a 9-21 record (5-13 in Conference USA).
Her termination was announced by NMSU’s Athletic Director Joe Fields on Sunday, March 8.
“This decision aligns with the department’s commitment to continued growth and long-term success. NM State is moving proactively to position the program for future achievement,” Fields said in a press release.
Prior to coaching at NMSU, Adams served as Southern Illinois’s assistant coach from 2018-22 and was with Murray State University for a year (2007-08) before moving on to Wichita State for nine years (2008-17), in head coaching positions at both.

Her time with the Aggies produced two postseason tournament appearances and a 57-71 record (31-39 in CUSA). However, her final season coaching at NMSU ended the team’s season by losing 10 of their last 12 games. The Aggies finished 11-12 in conference standings, compared to last year’s fifth place finish.
“Our vision for Aggie Women’s Basketball remains unwavering. We are fully committed to competing for championships, graduating our student-athletes and operating a first-class organization that embodies the values of New Mexico State University. We are excited about the future of this program and the opportunities ahead,” Fields said.
The department is officially searching for the next head coach and said they will work to find a leader who aligns with the university’s vision for the future of women’s basketball at NMSU.
