Bernadette Peters, Vanessa Williams, Phylicia Rashad, Dame Judi Dench, Sarah Bareilles, are just a handful of the names that have leant their talents to the fantastical musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine since its beginnings on Broadway in 1987. With countless
awards, nominations, revivals, tours, local and regional productions, and a Disney film adaptation, how has this musical become a staple for almost forty years?
One might argue that it is because it is rooted in what we know – the Brothers Grimm fairytales embedded in our cultural knowledge all become intertwined, creating comedy and chaos as all the characters pursue what they wish for most. And of course, everything is resolved and everyone lives happily ever after…well, until Act II. Perhaps this is why the musical has lasted so long, because we know that fairytales are just that, fairytales, and getting what we want can come with a price and that is why we love the musical; it connects to our struggles
and our humanity.
Please join NMSU Theatre in our production and celebration of one of legendary composer Stephen Sondheim’s most famous works. Recommended for ages 13+.
