New Mexico State University’s Engineering Complex III will be closed until further notice due to an early morning fire in the building.

The NMSU emergency notification system sent out the announcement around 8 a.m. Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications Justin Bannister said the university has little information at the moment.

“Engineering complex III had a fire with significant water damage from the sprinkler system. The fire is out, but the building is not usable at this time,” Bannister said.  “The NMSU fire department is at the scene.”

The damage from both the water and the fire was extensive, Bannister said.

“Looks like the fire was contained to a single room on the third floor. Affected areas are on the west corridor- that’s where the room is located,” Bannister said. “There’s flooding/water damage on multiple floors from the water.”

Bannister said that at the moment, classes in the building are cancelled until the department can find an alternative space for students to work.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

This is a developing story and The Round Up will have more updates as further detail becomes available.
