After getting to finally play a series in the Pan American Center New Mexico State got the series sweep over Tarleton winning todays match 3-0 and coming also with today’s win the Aggies clinched the WAC as the regular season champions.
The Aggies match yesterday was the first in the Pan American Center, since late 2019 as they took on Tarleton State Texans in the first of a two-game series. Getting the win yesterday was NM State 3-1 winning the first two sets, then losing the third by a small margin and coming back in the fourth getting the set win and winning the match.
The set’s scores were 25-15, 25-19, 21-25 and 25-14, as NMSU was led by Lia Mosher with 16 kills and Victoria Barret with 14 kills. Victoria Barret also had an amazing 7 aces while the leading blocker was Lindsay Blakey who had 6. As a team the Aggies amassed a total of 62 kills compared the 34 from Tarleton.
Starting out todays game both sides were looking good as play was back and forth early, until the Aggies got a little 4-0 run to get themselves up 10-6. Tarleton State could never get any ground as the rest of the game was just point for point as the Aggies held the lead the whole way getting the first set 25-20. In the first set NM State totaled in a remarkable 20 kills, as Tarleton got up to 13 total kills.
In the second set the Aggies got a couple of little spurts early getting up by 7-2. Coming back into the game, Tarleton got three straight points and brough the game back close 8-6. Not giving up any more space NMSU extended their lead 12-6 on a 4-0 run, forcing a timeout to be called by the Texans.
Coming out of the timeout both sides were going point for point as the Aggies kept their lead, but not growing it by much as they are ahead 20-12. Keeping their lead NM State finished out the set on a Savannah Davison kill winning it 25-17 and going up 2-0 in the match.
The third set started out just like the first two with a lot of back and forth play until the Aggies got a little 4-0 run separating themselves 7-3, forcing the Texans to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Aggies added another point onto their run. Being down by as many as 9 points the Texans would not go down without a fight brining the game back within five 16-11, forcing Coach Jordan to call a timeout and get his team calmed down.
Holding on tight in a come back effort by Tarleton, the Aggies won the third set in a very sloppy game play late in the set. The set was a very close one late with a score of 25-20, coming away with it on a Savannah Davison kill.
Leading the Aggies was Victoria Barret and Savanna Davison both with 12 kills and Shaney Lipscomb who totals 10 kills. As a team the Aggies struggled in the service area totaling in 13 service errors, but luckily that did not deter them as they stepped up in other parts of the game.
Next up for NM State will be their last series of the regular season, as they will travel to Chicago to face off against Chicago State, next Monday and Tuesday.
