State Treasurer warns against fraud phone calls

Billy Huntsman, Managing Editor

New Mexico’s Office of the State Treasurer has sent warning to state universities, state police, and the state attorney’s office that about 18 New Mexico students have received fraudulent phone calls.

The students, who are from NMSU, UNM, CNM, and ENMU, have received these fraudulent phone calls with the State Treasurer’s caller ID—either 505-955-1121 or 505-955-1120. The caller, who “had a foreign accent,” is telling students there is “a complaint” against the student, the student owes taxes, the student is being sought by the police, and/or the student is being sued.

No demand for payment was made in any of the cases, the Treasurer’s Office says. Any student who receives one of these calls should know that the Treasurer’s Office would never request personal information, nor make these kinds of calls or threats.

Individuals who receive these calls are advised to hang up immediately, providing no information.
