Police look for suspect in shooting at bar near NMSU

A shooting in the parking lot of Whiskey Dicks off of Union Ave. left one injured and one dead. Nov. 13, 2025.

The Las Cruces Police Department is investigating a double shooting at Whiskey Dicks bar early morning Sunday, Nov. 8. They released a statement to the public the following Monday afternoon asking witnesses to send any videos they have to help in the investigation. 

The shooting resulted in the death of Javier Velasquez, 28, and the injury of Gabriel Lucero, 37, who is now in pPolice custody. 

Just before 2 a.m. Sunday morning, Las Cruces police and fire departments responded to reports of shots being fired in the parking lot. 

Police reports say the two men were involved in a physical confrontation. Lucero allegedly armed himself and shot Velasquez. An unnamed person then shot Lucero. 

Both victims were transported to local hospitals. Velasquez succumbed to his injuries at the hospital and Lucero remains hospitalized and in custody. 

Police are still trying to identify the person who shot Lucero. 

Police are asking anyone with information to call 575-526-0795. Witnesses can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers of Las Cruces and Dona Ana County at 1-800-222-8477.

Elizabeth Anne Andrews, Editor-in-Chief
Elizabeth Anne Andrews is in her third year at The Round Up, and her first as Editor-in-Chief. She is a junior majoring in Journalism and Media Studies with a minor in Creative Writing. She has written over 30 articles for The Round Up, three of which have won Best of SNO awards, and one that was also published in the Las Cruces Sun-News. She attended the NMPA College Journalism Workshop in 2024, and the CMA ProCon25 with the rest of the editorial and multimedia staff.  Elizabeth Anne always knew she had a passion for writing but wasn’t always sure where that would lead her. When she attended a virtual tour of NMSU in high school, she was drawn to the journalism program. Since beginning her career as a journalist at NMSU, she has grown to love it for the opportunities it gives her to meet people and learn new things. She is excited to continue working at The Round Up and leading this year’s staff. She hopes to help The Round Up bring accountability to campus, local and national leaders, and shine light on organizations supporting the diverse student population of NMSU. After graduating, Elizabeth Anne hopes to work at a local paper. Maybe one day she’ll work for a national paper, but for now she’s happy to focus on issues specifically affecting the borderland community she fell in love with when her military family moved here a few years ago. In her free time, Elizabeth Anne enjoys reading, listening to vinyl records, and spending time with her family.

David Castañeda is starting his fourth year as a part time student at NMSU, and his fourth year at The Round Up. As the Multimedia Editor David’s in charge of helping the multimedia staff grow their photography/videography and graphic design skills as well as covering stories and helping create social media content. He has massive pride in his Mexican ethnicity and wears it on his skin as much as he can. Outside of The Round Up he loves to spend his time learning about global politics, playing instruments, and watching movies/ tv shows with his partner.
