From the Broadway Stage to the American Southwest Theatre, the hit movie “It’s A Wonderful Life” is coming to New Mexico State for the holiday season. The 1940’s movie was produced by Frank Capra, and was revamped years later by Joe Landry, who turned the film into a radio broadcast. NMSU theater takes you to Bedford Falls, to discover the magic of an angel in a small-town American live radio.
“This play really restores anyone’s faith in humanity and highlights the spirit of community,” Nichole Hamilton, producer and director of NMSU production said.
In the play, George Bailey has dreams of going to college, traveling the world, building things and “doing something big and important.” He sacrifices those dreams to save his father’s business, a building, and loan that helps the small, hard-working, mostly immigrant town of Bedford Falls build homes of their own despite Potter, the tyrannical slumlord, and who intends to keep the town under his thumb. Over the years, George starts a family, builds the business, and helps the community. Throughout the play, George faces many hardships that are overwhelming for him, but an angel named Clarence Oddbody has a plan for George.
“This is really an ensemble piece,” Hamilton said. “We have singers who have created preshow entertainment – so get there early to enjoy the Holiday music.”
This play brings a bit of nostalgia back.
“I would love to see those who love the 1940s era,” Hamilton said. “ And whom may be interested in seeing a recreation of a live studio radio play, come out and enjoy the showcase.”
This production is meant to showcase each character at their best. Auditions were held at the beginning of the semester, and rehearsals began in the middle of October – the long coming is finally ready to showcase all of the talents NMSU has to offer.
“I would love to see any and every one from Las Cruces attend this show: friends and family in town for the holidays,” Hamilton said.
