New Mexico State Greek life springs into recruitment

New Mexico State University’s Greek Life rush is expected to begin as soon as classes are back in session. For sororities, fall and spring recruitment are very different, and for fraternities, the spring process is very similar to the fall.
Sororities on campus have what is called COB events in the spring, or Continuous Open Bidding. This means that instead of a formal recruitment where potential new members (PNM’s) go from house to house, the PNM’s go to different events at the house they think would best suit them.
The date that each sorority brings recruitment is also dependent on each chapter. The events usually consist of crafts or dinners with the sorority house, in order to spend one-on-one time with the girls and get to know them better.
One of the potential benefits to spring recruitment is that it is less formal, and it offers the chance to talk with sorority girls longer than the time allotted during fall recruitment. However a downside is that during fall recruitment, PNM’s visit every house, and in the spring, they attend events hosted by the house they think would be the best fit.
DiAndria Gallegos, a freshman and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha joined her sorority through a COB type of event in the fall, but said that it was much more like spring recruitment than fall recruitment.
“It’s different because you are still like in the fall pledge class, but during the spring, and you get to know a lot of the girls” Gallegos said. “In the spring, we have crown ball, Greek week, Greek Olympics, socials and formals”.
Spring rush for fraternities is much like fall rush. Each fraternity picks a week full of activities that anyone can attend. At the end of the week, members of each fraternity may offer an invitation to a preference night.
This night is exclusive to those who have been invited, and it is the final round of fraternity rush. After preference night, is bid day, where potential new members are offered membership into a fraternity.
Dylan Rottman, a sophomore, and a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity said that the only difference between spring and fall fraternity rush is the amount of activities that members are expected to participate in.
“The only difference is the being a spring pledge is usually easier than a fall pledge, because you don’t have to worry about things like homecoming or anchor splash or big things like that,” explains Rottman.
Another difference between spring and fall rush is the amount of people who are brought into the chapter. “As far as numbers go, a good fall rush is about 30-40 pledges” said Rottman. “While a good spring rush is only about 12-15 pledges”.
As far as costs are concerned, it is free to go through spring sorority recruitment, while in the fall, it costs $15. For fraternities, there is no cost to go through rush at all.
