After having a 34-match conference winning streak snapped in a 3-2 thriller to Utah Valley Monday night, the New Mexico State volleyball got back to their winning ways, leaving no doubt in their 3-0 sweep of the Wolverines.

The long awaited series between the first and second place teams in the WAC did not disappoint in the opening matchup, with UVU coming back from two sets down and overcoming two match points to upset the WAC leaders for their first loss of the season. This is uncharted territory for this season’s group of Aggies, as they haven’t lost a WAC game since Nov. 3, 2018, coincidentally against UVU in the Lockhart Arena.

Today’s win wouldn’t come easy for the Aggies despite the lopsided set count, as they went back and forth with neither side able to get to a significant advantage one way or another. UVU led the majority of the first set, but never by more than three points, and that was only until the Aggies mounted a mini four-point run to go back on top before a Wolverine timeout.

Coming out of the timeout NM State added two more points to their lead to extend it to a 6-0 run, but UVU would get a couple of points back after another break in the action. The Aggies would call a timeout of their own and seal the deal soon after that with a Victoria Barret kill.

The second set began much like the first, only with the Aggies holding a tight lead through the better portion of it. NM State would have their usual runs, with little push back from UVU, scoring five-straight in the back half of the set to go up 20-14. Timeouts wouldn’t do the opposition any good this time, as the Aggies closed things out easily by a scoreline of 25-18.

New Mexico State came out showing their true team dominance in the third set, going up 11-5 after a little 4-0 run that forced the Wolverines to call a timeout early in the set. UVU would not go down easy, fighting back and getting a small 3-0 run to bring the set back within five points at 19-14, but Mike Jordan and his squad were not letting anything else slip away, allowing little of anything else and finishing their sweep with a 25-16 third act of vengeance.

Coming back after a tough loss last night, the Aggies showed why they’re still the class of the conference with a dominant 3-0 showing that featured 116 attacks, 50 kills, 7 aces and 5 blocks. Leading all kills was Aggies Savannah Davison with 11, while Victoria Barrett had an all-around game with 30 attacks, 10 kills, 17 digs and 12 total points.

The season’s starting to wind down, but NM State still has two more regular season series before heading into the WAC Tournament, where they still possess a stranglehold on the top seed — the next of which coming next Monday and Tuesday against Tarleton State in what will be their final “home” game of the campaign.
